What are Encaustic Tiles

Encaustic tiles are man-made tiles often made of cement. The tiles might have a pattern within it, or a solid-colour tile might be laid to reveal patterns across the floor. Victorian and Edwardian tiles are often thought of as encaustic, however these tiles from the early 1900’s are made of a baked quarry-type tile that does not react to acids, whereas the later cement-based tile will etch when using the wrong chemicals to clean it.

Similar to Victorian, the colour of the clay is typically inlaid into the body of the tile, so the design remains as the tile is worn down.

How to clean Encaustic tiles

Only use a neutral pH cleaning solution that’s designed to protect the surface of the encaustic tiles. Ask your manufacturer what type of cleaning solutions can be used that will retain the warranty of the tile. Please see our blog posts under the News section to read more about tile maintenance.

Professional Encaustic tile cleaning

A professional encaustic tile cleaning service will remove dirt by stripping off old sealant with a rotary machine. Care must be taken to use the correct cleaning pads because a black pad might be too rough and end up scuffing the surface of the encaustic tile. The grout lines can often only be reached through brushes, but only gentle brushes should be used.

Over time the surface of the tiles can become scuffed and dull from light scratches or etch marks that may have been caused by acidic spillages. Some encaustic manufacturers allow professional companies to polish the tiles back to it’s glossy surface, unfortunately many do not, so we resort to using a topical sealer to restore a shine. For encaustic tiles that can be lightly polished with diamond resin sanding pads, we finish the service with an impregnating sealer that soaks into the porous tiles.
