Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized mineral particles or rock fragments that may display visible stratification layers. It is often composed of quartz, feldspar, mica, lithic fragments and biogenic debris such as shells. It may be any colour due to impurities within the minerals, but the most common colours are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black.
Sandstone floors are very porous and not much use in bathrooms and kitchens due to its slippery characteristics when wet, especially if polished. Because it is soft and easily become scratched, and over time heavy footfall will change its overall appearance due to erosion. Sandstone is highly susceptible to alkaline and can be damaged by acids.
